I dissagree social networks are big threat to blogging. Sure they provide new time consuming tasks (updating status, sharing ideas...) but I think it only affects wannabe bloggers, who post once in a while. Serious and dedicated bloggers will stay and can use social networks and communities to promote their blog. So maybe it's helping to clear the blog scene of redundant andininspiring blogs.

i personally link back my blog from the social networking zovue and when i add a new blog, all my followers get an update.

Also if i store photos on Zovue.com, and video of my blogs. My followers get an update too! because how else will they know whats new,,,unless they keep checking your blog everyday. and some people just dont have the time, or they forget to check back.

when they get the update, their like...oh yeah...i should read that blog, or see that photo or video.

I read many of my friends blog through a link in the Facebook status. And also their comments and updated on others blog. Many of whom I have no idea owns a blog. (but nearly everyone owns a blog) So it's not so bad a thing after all in my opinion.

I tried Facebook recently and I got sick of it very quickly. It really seems to bring the very worst out in people. They amass a horde of "friends" and they think that they're celebrities or something! It's a bit of a fad at the moment but I think people will wake up to it in time and start to get tired of Facebook and similar sites.

Blogging is a far superior medium. You have to do some work when you write a blog. And they are much more useful sources of information.

While blogging may seem threatened by social networks at the moment I think it will weather the storm and come back stronger than ever in the long run.

@Matt Hayden, good points there, and I will add that social networks will continue but their growth will eventually bottom-out for three reasons:

1. There will always be noobs who are looking for an easy, introductory way to get into pseudo-blogging.

2. Users will eventually grow out of the confines of a website and get a real blog of their own.

Hopefully :-)

3. One last thing .. I wonder how many of those new Social Network profiles will be abandoned shortly thereafter? It was the same thing for blogging.

I'm thinking that social networking websites are going to be the new place where blogging is done. Zovue.com, the social networking website, has built in blogging where I can blog jus tlike anywhere else - exceot that I can choose who sees my blog. The same goes for anything on the site - online photo sharing, online video storage, etc. - but for blogging, I want everyone to see my stuff so I set my privacy settings to 'celebrity'. I agree that there is a lot of waste on most social networking sites that's why I use Zovue.com because it is a more professional focused social network. As a matter of fact zovue.com is a private social network that gives me the choice of privacy settings.

Micro-blogging is great...in it's place. Even with that said there's no way it will ever replace blogging. I think if it's used as a supplement to a person's actual blog it can be most helpful in driving traffic to your site.
